Talk To Her
Foreign Javier Cámara, Darío Grandinetti, Leonor Watling, Rosario Flores, Mariola Fuentes, Geraldine Chaplin, Pina Bausch, Malou Airaudo, Caetano Veloso, Roberto Álvarez, Elena Anaya, Lola Dueñas, Adolfo Fernández, Ana Fernández, Chus Lampreave Pedro Almodóvar
Spanish director Pedro Almodovar's "Talk To Her" is his least stylised, most accessible and arguably greatest movie. Covering the same, highly provocative terrain as Dennis Potter's "Brimstone and Treacle" and The Smiths' "Girlfriend in a Coma", Almodovar forges a work that's funny, compassionate, engaging and deeply touching.
Unusually for Almodovar, the emphasis is on the two male characters, with the female leads spending much of the film as "objects" in a vegetative state. Dario Grandinetti plays Marco, a journalist who befriends Lydia (Rosario Flores), a female bullfighter. Following a goring in the ring, she lapses into a coma. At the clinic where she is kept on life support, Marco meets a somewhat effete male nurse, Benigno (Javier Camara) who lovingly tends to a ballet student, Alicia, also chronically comatose. They strike up a friendship, their respective stories emerging through flashbacks. Both, however, respond to their common fate in different ways. Marco is distraught at the loss of Lydia, whereas the dysfunctional Benigno is blissful, tending to Alicia, for whom he nourished an obsession prior to accident. Reduced to being a vegetable, she is fully, unresistingly, his.
It's a tribute to Almodovar that he is able to handle the outlandish, potentially appalling subject matter of "Talk To Her" with such finesse. Emotionally, it's often on a knife edge; there are moments when you don't know whether to laugh, gasp or sigh. But when ultimately you find yourself welling with tears of sympathy for an alleged rapist, you realise what a master filmmaker Almodovar is.
On the DVD: "Talk To Her" offers an excellent transfer of a visually handsome movie. Extras are a little disappointing--just trailers for Almodovar's more outlandish "Live Flesh" and "All About My Mother". --"David Stubbs"

Team America - World Police
Comedy Trey Parker, Matt Stone, Kristen Miller, Masasa, Daran Norris, Phil Hendrie Trey Parker
An elite U.S. counter-terrorism squad loses a member while decimating half of Paris in the reckless pursuit of Middle Eastern maniacs; a Broadway actor with a traumatic childhood secret is naturally hired to replace him. Oh--and they're all marionettes. "South Park" maestros Trey Parker and Matt Stone (along with co-writer Pam Brady) came up with this shameless satire of pea-brained Hollywood action flicks and even smaller-minded global politics, so don't expect subtlety or even a hint of good taste. "Team America" is soon on the trail of North Korea's evil Kim Jong Il, who treats us to a tender song about his loneliness before ensnaring Alec Baldwin and the rest of the oblivious Film Actors Guild (F.A.G. for short) in a plot to blow up every major city on the planet. Just as the mindless squad cheerfully demolishes everything in sight, so do director Parker and company. Throwing punches left, right and in-between, the movie's politics leave no turn un-stoned; there's even time to bludgeon the musical "Rent". It's offensive, irresponsible comic anarchy seemingly made by sniggering little boys. "Painfully funny" sniggering little boys. "--Steve Wiecking, Amazon.com"

Tie Me Up! Tie Me Down!
World Cinema Victoria Abril, Antonio Banderas Pedro Almodovar
if you have not watched any other almodovar films then you may find this a little shocking. for almodovar however it is typical. extreme relationships and open sexuality seem to be some of his main themes so this isn't necessarily a film to wathc with your parents!
Banderas is fantastic, you can hardly take your eyes off him, but victoria abril makes a worthy opposite for him. watch out for some of the almodovar favourites dotted about the place- his brother, mother and various others appear.
this is a great film in it's own right, and one of my favourites. there are some great extras too- a spanish language interview between banderas and almodovar, and also the madrid premiere party. and don't be put off by the fact that everything is in spanish, banderas shines in his native language!

Tim Burton's Corpse Bride
Animation Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham-Carter, Emily Watson, Albert Finney, Richard E. Grant Tim Burton
Who else but Tim Burton could make "Corpse Bride", a necrophiliac's delight that's fun for the whole family? Returning to the richly imaginative realm of stop-motion animation--after previous successes with "The Nightmare Before Christmas" and "James and the Giant Peach", Burton, with codirector Mike Johnson, invites us to visit the dour, ashen, and drearily Victorian mansions of the living, where young Victor Van Dort, voiced by Johnny Depp, is bequeathed to wed the lovely Victoria.
But the wedding rehearsal goes sour and, in the kind of Goth-eerie forest that only exists in Burton-land, Victor suddenly finds himself accidentally married to the Corpse Bride, voiced by Helena Bonham Carter, a blue-tinted, half-skeletal beauty with a loquacious maggot installed behind one prone-to-popping eyeball.
This being a Burton creation, the underworld of the dead is a lively and colorful place indeed, and Danny Elfman's songs and score make it even livelier, presenting Victor with quite a dilemma: Should he return above-ground to Victoria, or remain devoted to his corpse bride? At a brisk 76 minutes, Burton's graveyard whimsy never wears out its welcome, and the voice casting is superbly matched the film's gloriously amusing character design, guaranteed to yield a wealth of gruesome toys and action figures for many Halloweens to come. --"Jeff Shannon"

Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas
Animation Danny Elfman, Chris Sarandon, Catherine O'Hara, William Hickey, Glenn Shadix, Paul Reubens, Ken Page, Edward Ivory, Susan McBride, Debi Durst, Greg Proops, Kerry Katz, Randy Crenshaw, Sherwood Ball, Carmen Twillie Henry Selick
For those who never thought Disney would release a film in which Santa Claus is kidnapped and tortured, well, here it is. The full title is "Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas", which should give you an idea of the tone of this stop-action animated musical/fantasy/horror/comedy. It is based on characters created by Burton, the former Disney animator best known as the director of "Pee-wee's Big Adventure", "Beetlejuice", "Edward Scissorhands" and the first two "Batman" movies. His benignly scary-funny sensibility dominates the story of Halloweentown resident Jack Skellington (voice by Danny Elfman, who also wrote the songs), who stumbles on a bizarre and fascinating alternative universe called ... Christmastown! Directed by Henry Selick (who later made the delightful " James and the Giant Peach"), this PG-rated picture has a reassuringly light touch. As Roger Ebert noted in his review, "some of the Halloween creatures might be a tad scary for smaller children, but this is the kind of movie older kids will eat up; it has the kind of offbeat, subversive energy that tells them wonderful things are likely to happen." "--Jim Emerson"
On the DVD:This Special edition is a must for all Burton fans with the biggest gem to be found on a DVD release--"Tim Burtons Early Films" which holds his first two works. "Vincent" is clear predecessor of "Nightmare before Christmas" using the same stop-animation style and voiced superbly by Vincent Price himself; and "Frankenweenie"--a B&W live-action flick--takes you back to early B-movie territory seen through the eyes of a boy. Added to these films is a great special-features menu including a short documentary offering an interview with Burton, which exposes the inspiration for this magical animation and presents the three-year task of making the "Nightmare". On top of this is an in-depth commentary by director Henry Selick and Art director Pete Kozachik and layer upon layer of "character development" offering an insight into the intensity of thought that went into making these animated figures real. You also get a great selection of storyboards along with the sequences they manifest into, deleted storyboards and an animated sequence with a surprise alternative ending. The menu is beautifully animated in keeping with the style of artwork in the film. With a 1.66:1 widescreen format and Dolby digital transfer this charming DVD is perfect for Halloween, Christmas and beyond! --"Nikki Disney"

Tinseltown Box Set
Drama Comedy Arye Gross, Joe Pantoliano, Ron Perlman, Kristy Swanson, Tom Wood (II), John Considine, David Dukes, Nicole Hansen, Mark Neal, Nichole Pelerine, Rebecca Gray, Bryn Pryor, Ron Thomson, Hershey Felder, Saleem (III) Tony Spiridakis
Yet another great drama on tv! One of the best i'd say. Great actors including Dawn Steele(Monarch of the Glen) but in a very different role. Lots of drugs, sex and dancing but also violence. If you like that sort of thing I'd say go ahead and buy it but it's not for the easily offended. My eyes were glued to the tv and Im sure you'll be the same.

Torchwood - Series 1 Vol.1
Science Fiction & Fantasy John Barrowman, Burn Gorman, Naoko Mori

Well I wasnt quite sure what to expect, I hadnt seen any of the tv series but enjoyed programs like dr.who etc so thought it was worth a shot. I have to admit I enjoyed it! having read some of the other comments I felt I must share my views. Some of the reviews refer to the crew making mistakes etc and that it needs a shot of realism. Well sorry but people make mistakes thats life I think it makes the characters more appealing and 'real', secondly it is a scifi program how much realsim do you really want? I like stories! they are that and I enjoy them for what they are, I didnt have to concentrate to hard on the plot or characters it was just easy going entertainment which was what I was after and I look forward to the next episode. Although I do wish Gwen would sort her hair out, is it a wig???>>>>

Torchwood - Series 1 Vol.2
Science Fiction & Fantasy John Barrowman, Naoko Mori, Burn Gorman
when i first heard about Torchwood, i was a little sceptical. But after re-watching the doctor who episodes with Captain Jack Harkness (AKA John Barrowman) i started to like the idea. and after the double bill on BBC3 i was hooked from start to finish.

the storylines are amazing and they convey such emotion, fear and also happiness when stuff goes right. they are very daring and at times a little risque. It also has that sense of danger that makes you bite your nails or in the case of the last two episodes (Captain Jack Harkness/End of Days) has you crying till it hurts.

Each of the characters has their own little quirks and character flaws that make them individual to the team.
all in all, well worth watching as it makes Doctor Who look like....well....what it is...a family show.

Torchwood - Series 1 Vol.3
Science Fiction & Fantasy John Barrowman, Eve Myles
Torchwood is one of those TV programmes that you either love or loathe, there does not appear to be any middle ground, having read and listened to many opinions on it. That said, I am definitely in the former school of thought though, I think that Russell T. Davies has created an intelligent and enthralling Sci Fi series, that providing it can keep up the standards of this first season, should be with us for years to come.

John Barrowman reprises his role as the bisexual time traveller - Captain Jack Harkness, from the first series of Dr Who. Here he is the head of Cardiff's Torchwood Institute, a clandestine organisation set up to monitor and control extraterrestrial activity, at the same time looking after UK interests....
His team comprises of former WPC Gwen, Owen - a doctor, Toshiko an IT expert, and Ianto a Jack Of All Trades (including being Jack's part time lover). Suzy another member of the team is killed off at the beginning but gets to make a return appearance in a later episode.
The Sci Fi aspect apart, Torchwood focuses on the various characters in detail, as the series unfolds. The selfish and cynical Owen is examined in greater detail when he experiences real love for the first time, and in another episode when he gets to question his raison d'etre in an episode which nods towards the film 'Fight Club'. Gwen's relationship with her boyfriend Reece is sympathetically explored and how the pressures of work and her attraction to Owen impact upon it. We also get to learn more about Jack and his past life, loves and experiences.

All thirteen episodes of the series have their strengths and weaknesses to varying degrees. The last two episodes, however, do link into Dr Who (giving any more detail would be a spoiler). However, my favourite episodes are as follows:
'Small Worlds' where the Torchwood team find out that Faeries do exist and are in fact ancient and very malevolent beings of power who do not take kindly to being crossed. Add to that an elderly woman who is one of Jack's past lovers and school girl getting bullied by her peers and stalked by a paedophile and you have a potent mix that boils down into one of the very best episodes of the series.
'Random Shoes' which initially looks similar to the not so wonderful 'Gods and Monsters' episode from Dr Who Series 2. Luckily it is much better than that and follows the exploits of a young man - Eugene(superby played by Paul Chequers) who has a serious crush on Gwen and also wants to work for Torchwood. Eugene survives (in a fashion) sudden death by means of an alien artifact, and the viewer is taken on a tour of his life, and can empathise with his wish to get outside the ordinariness of it all... as well as his coming to terms with being dead.
'Out Of Time' sees a plane from the 1950s fly through a time portal and land in the present day. The passengers and pilot are then faced with the reality of life in the 21st Century. This episode manages to be funny, touching, poignant, and tragic.
'Countrycide' is an episode which draws heavily from the Horror genre, as the team delve into a series of disappearences in a certain rural area. Soon they discover that the reason is both very grisly and very frightening... While not very original this remains a highly watchable and exciting episode.
Other episodes see a partly converted Cyberwoman trying to finish off the process and then convert others, vicious aliens known as 'Weevils', time travel, and alien artifacts.

Torchwood is a superbly entertaining Sci Fi series yet also manages to explore human nature in an in depth and at times painfully so manner.
Love it or loathe it, I think this will be around for a while, and I for one definitely look forward to Series 2.
One a technical note, I hope this complete series DVD will be in 5.1 sound
because the part series DVDs are in 2.0 only. Dr Who DVDs were released in exactly that format, so hopefully the BBC are doing the same with Torchwood.

Totally F***ed Up
World Cinema James Duval, Roko Belic, Susan Behshid
Gregg's Araki's early works are very much a training ground for him. Although the elements that make his style and originality are already there ('homemade movie' style edition, teenage disillusion and drug abuse, colours, music, carefully selected background to all scenes, 18 rating) he is not on top of his game yet and the result is much less powerful that his later movies. Here the script lacks depth, the characters remain strangers to the viewer all through the film and nothing seems to go anywhere for most of the duration of the movie. This is not to say this work is not interesting but I would recommend it only to Araki's fans who are interested in the evolution of his cinema and story telling. For all others I would suggest 'Nowhere', the 3rd part of his trilogy (this being the 1rst part) which is, in my mind, his best movie so far.

A Toute Vitesse
World Cinema Elodie Bouchez, Stephane Rideau
This is a very ambitious movie in respect of the themes it deals with. At its core it is about the mostly difficult and unfulfilled relationships between four young friends. The movie is mostly interested in politics, style and, to a lesser extent, philosophy and the strong emotions that bind the four friends together are portrayed from a political and intellectual angle. This unfortunately lessens the movie's impact as a sense of emotional detachment pervades the storytelling. Some may say that that is indeed the point of the movie, as the main character is a rather cynical, cold and very ambitious author who seems more interested in observing the world than taking part in it. From an intellectual point of view the movie posses some interesting questions about race, ambition, betrayal and art - judged on that basis the movie is largely successful.

The Trap Door
Animation William Rushton Charlie Mills, Terry Brain
When I added this to my wishlist I knew it was one I remember and would really enjoy. What I didn't realise was how much I would enjoy it! TV as it used to be, TV as it is supposed to be!

Stay away from that trap dooooooor... cos there's something down there!

Cannot recommend this enough!

The Trap Door - Breakfast Time And Other Adventures
Children's William Rushton Charles Mills, Terry Brain
This is the best show ever, I used to watch it when I was 4 and now it just plain old RULES.

Trick
Romance Tori Spelling, Christian Campbell, John Paul Pitoc, Brad Beyer, Lacey Kohl, Abbey Hope, Becky Caldwell, Kate Flannery, Steve Hayes (III), Will Keenan, Joey Dedio, Ricky Ritzel, Lissette Gutierrez, Lorri Bagley, Kevin Andrew Jim Fall
This is an enchanting gay romantic comedy and one of the best gay themed films I've seen. It follows one evening in the life of the two main characters Gabriel and Mark (played by the very gorgeous Christian Campbell and J.P.Peroc) as they search for somewhere to have what is initially intended as a one night stand. As the film progresses, a relationship begins to develop between the two and it becomes apparent that the one-night stand has the potential to be much more. The film sensitively explores themes of desire, longing, jealousy and commitment. The cast, especially Campbell, Peroc and Spelling are excellent. The film has a whimsical quality and is by turns funny, sad and moving. For any gay viewers feeling depressed by the scene, this will be the ideal tonic. Full marks, wonderful.

Trilogy - One / Two / Three
Foreign Catherine Frot, Lucas Belvaux, Dominique Blanc, Ornella Muti, Gilbert Melki, Francois Morel Lucas Belvaux
Although this comic story of a wifex27;s suspicions about her husbandx27;s fidelity is probably the weakest of the three, the idea behind Trilogy - three overlapping stories occurring simultaneously involving the same characters - makes the whole a unique and brilliant experiment that is much much greater than the sum of its parts.
In each film scenes are revisited but seen from another point of view. So what seems comic in this second film of the trilogy - a surprise birthday party for the husband, is the social background scene of a thriller in the first, and a psychological minefield for a detective and his wife in the third. The point being made throughout is that we never really know what is going on in other peoples lives and minds even if we have been friends or have been married to them for over 20 years.

The Twilight Zone - Season 1
Science Fiction & Fantasy
Although I have always heard of it (most people probably have) and seen some episodes from the 80's colour version aswell as the most recent version, I have only got round to watching this amazing original version for the first time ever in the correct order since I bought this DVD boxset. I had only previously seen a few clips of episodes at random years ago on someone elses sky T.V., I think it was on the sci-fi channel. Anyway this programme may be a long time before I existed, but I have said this before and I will say it again, when a programme is this good, it really doesn't matter to me how old or new it is. It has to be at the very least, some of the most imaginative story tellying I have ever seen. Whether they are creepy, funny, strange or however you want to describe them, they are all just as imaginative as each other and there is plenty of variety (36 to be exact on this first season), for example there is one episode involving a man who has an obsession with reading things (even something as simple as this, how many programmes today would even think of such a lead character) and an extremely cruel twist of fate at the end. Rod Serling had such a distinctive voice (very relaxing) which only adds to my enjoyment of this programme, I also really love the way he introduces each story and particularly his unique way in which he puts words together.

So if like me you like enjoyable stories with the imagination that most modern programmmes can only dream about and want to watch something that is as timeless as infinity then you won't find anything better than this.

One last thing for anybody that might be interested, this boxset includes a few extras for example, footage of Rod Serling picking up some awards and about fifteen minutes of footage from some game show called The Liars Club with Rod Serling as host, personally I have never heard of it but I am sure that some of you older and wiser people will have.

The Twilight Zone - Season 2
Science Fiction & Fantasy
Rod Serling was a genius and Season Two of the Twilight Zone will not dissapoint. This season has two of my personal favourites here; The Eye of the Beholder and The Invaders. In typical Serling style, these episodes have their twists at the end of the show and are thoroughly entertaining. This season guide is excellent and these two episodes are worth the price alone.

Twin Peaks: Complete Season 1
Mystery & Suspense Kyle MacLachlan, Michael Ontkean, Mädchen Amick, Dana Ashbrook, Richard Beymer, Lara Flynn Boyle, Sherilyn Fenn, Warren Frost, Peggy Lipton, James Marshall, Everett McGill, Jack Nance, Kimmy Robertson, Ray Wise, Joan Chen, Piper Laurie, Eric DaRe, Harry Goaz, Michael Horse, Sheryl Lee
One of the most influential TV shows of the 1990s, the first series of "Twin Peaks" has lost none of its quirky and queasy power to get under your skin and haunt your dreams. Without its groundbreaking mix of convoluted plotting, complex character interactions, surreal fantasy sequences and a continuous story arc, we would probably not have had "The X-Files", "The Sopranos", "Six Feet Under" or even "The League of Gentlemen". So brew up a pot of some "damn fine coffee", dig into some cherry pie, and lose yourself in David Lynch and Mark Frost's murder mystery-soap opera, which unfolds, in one character's words, "like a beautiful dream and terrible nightmare all at once".
"Twin Peaks" was a pop culture phenomenon, for this first series at least, until the increasingly bizarre twists and maddening teases so confounded audiences that they lost interest in just who killed Laura Palmer (Sheryl Lee). This series was also a career peak for most of its eclectic ensemble cast, including Kyle MacLachlan as straight-arrow FBI Special Agent Dale Cooper, Michael Ontkean as local Sheriff Harry S Truman, Sherilyn Fenn as bad girl Audrey Horne, Peggy Lipton as waitress Norma Jennings and Catherine Coulson as the Log Lady.
On the DVD: "Twin Peak, Series 1" comes as a four-disc set that contains the original pilot plus the first season's seven episodes (inexplicably, the pilot episode was omitted on the American Region 1 DVD release, but is reinstated here). Special features include episode introductions by the Log Lady, commentaries by assorted episode directors (but not Lynch), and features from the archives of the fanzine "Wrapped in Plastic". The 4:3 picture has been digitally remastered, and is now accompanied by a Dolby 5.1 soundtrack. --"Donald Liebenson"
